Australia's Soundwave Festival Featuring 16 Current Or Former Roadrunner Acts!

The lineup and dates for the annual Soundwave Festival in Australia was released today, and while we already told you that Trivium would be performing, we soon realized that the show was practically a Roadrunner event, as 16 current or former Roadrunner bands are scheduled to perform. Madina Lake/ Matthew Leone Attacker Charged With Attempted Murder

The alleged attacker of Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone has been charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery Causing Serious Bodily Harm and Aggravated Battery in a Public Place. The news came in an update from Matthew's twin brother Nathan.

Updating his blog, Nathan told fans and well wishers they were forging on with getting things back to normal, despite Matthew recently having to be taken into the ER with a ruptured wisdom tooth. With the weekend seeing 2 benefit shows in aid of Matthew in their native Chicago, they were "focusing on the positive".

"It’s a grandiose display of Chicago’s integrity, loyalty, compassion and strength and we’re so effing lucky to have such amazing people in our lives...There’s an old adage I try to live by which says “you are who you are and where you are because of the dominating thoughts that you allow to occupy your mind” .. so let them be positive, optimistic and inspiring thoughts.. crush the rest of em.."

On July 6th, Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone came to the rescue of a woman being beaten by her husband on the streets of Chicago. He didn’t know them; he just encountered them as he walked down the street and couldn’t ignore it. Having rescued her, the husband turned on Matthew as he was calling 911 and left him unconscious on the street. The beating he received was so severe, he had emergency surgery to remove a third of his skull to relieve swelling on his brain and repair numerous facial fractures. Matthew is currently awaiting further surgeries. He is slowly recovering, but unfortunately does not have insurance to cover the substantial medical bills.

Madina Lake Drummer On Playing The UK Without Matthew Leone

Last weekend MADINA LAKE played Sonisphere Festival- their first show without their bass player Matthew Leone- who was savagely beaten a few weeks ago coming to the aid of a woman being beaten in the street and is currently recovering at home after undergoing surgery on his brain.

In the video interview below, drummer Dan Torelli fills us in on how that first show without Matthew was for them and the emotions that went through his mind when they hit the stage last Sunday. He also talks about why they decided to continue with not only the Sonisphere show but the run of headline shows they had booked and the following Boardmaster and Hevy festival dates and also why, rather than have a stand in, they decided to simply play to Matthew's recorded bass parts.

Dan also fills us in a little about how Matthew is currently doing back home in Chicago and what they are working on for the future.

Smashing Pumpkins Raise Over $80,000 For Madina Lake's Matthew Leone

The Smashing Pumpkins raised over $80,000 (and counting, with a revised figure to follow) at their sold-out benefit concert Tuesday, July 27 at Chicago’s Metro for Matthew Leone, bassist for Chicago band Madina Lake. The money will go to the ongoing medical care needed for the musician who last month was hospitalized with severe brain trauma after intervening to stop a woman he passed on the street from being beaten by her husband. Matthew—whose medical insurance had lapsed just two months prior to the incident--was taken to UIC Hospital for emergency brain surgery wherein a third of his skull was removed to alleviate swelling. He's currently in stable condition awaiting an additional brain surgery to reapply the removed portion of his skull.

“The Smashing Pumpkins' benefit show at Metro Tuesday night was triumphant and tearful, inspiring and rousing, open-hearted and generous—as well as a stark reminder that sometimes it takes a village to get a crime victim adequate health care,” wrote the Chicago Tribune (7/28/10). The event was attended by Chicago governor Pat Quinn, who proclaimed Tuesday "Matthew Leone Day" in Illinois and said, "We have a true American hero right here in Matthew Leone” (as noted in the Chicago Tribune piece).

“I was inspired by Matthew's courageous defense of a woman he didn't even know,” said the Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan. “What pushed me to do the benefit for his medical fund was how much he is loved by close friends of mine who know him well. I spoke to his family at the benefit and they all said that it didn't surprise them at all that he did what he did to stop an injustice. “I was blown away by the Chicago community coming together to put this benefit on so quickly,” Corgan added about the event that was announced on July 20. “It put an emotional charge into our show that was unlike anything I've ever experienced. I was absolutely honored to be standing on the Metro stage, my musical home, showing our support for one of our own. It was a great night in the long, storied history of Chicago. And an epic show.” As soon as the band finished playing “1979,” Corgan pulled his guitar off his neck and auctioned it off to the crowd, selling it for 10k.

Said Joe Shanahan, owner of Chicago’s Metro: “This past Tuesday was one of my most memorable nights within Metro's walls--the outpouring of support and encouragement for a true hero, Matthew, was overwhelming. From Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins' donation of their time and talent to the cause, to Governor Pat Quinn's proclamation of Matthew Leone Day, to the generosity of the crowd with their pocketbooks, the night embodied the love and solidarity of the Chicago music community for one of their own. Now, all of us at Metro pray for a quick recovery for Matthew and someday his own return to the Metro stage with Madina Lake.”

Noted AOL Spinner: “For the encore, the Metro staff and opener Kill Hannah joined Corgan onstage to sing '1979.' After, the band closed with the distorted bliss of 'Gossamer,' as their guitars thundered and strobes flashed. When their over two-hour set finished, a smiling Corgan and his band threw their commemorative drumsticks and guitar picks into the audience, capping a heartfelt tribute to Leone. ‘You made this city proud tonight,’ Corgan told the jovial crowd. ‘Thanks for stepping up.'”

The Smashing Pumpkins Set to Perform a Benefit Show For Madina Lake's Injured Bassist

The Smashing Pumpkins will perform a benefit concert next Tuesday, July 27th at Chicago’s Metro to raise money for the medical care of Matthew Leone, bassist for Chicago-based band Madina Lake. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday July 21st at noon RIGHT HERE. Further ticketing information is below. Support will come from Kill Hannah.

Earlier this month, Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone was hospitalized with severe brain trauma after intervening to stop a woman on the street from being beaten by her husband. Even though the attacker was twice his size, Matthew immediately intervened and managed to subdue the attacker but as he waited for police to arrive, the attacker turned on Matthew, beating him severely and leaving him unconscious in the street. Matthew was taken to UIC Hospital for emergency brain surgery wherein a third of his skull was removed to alleviate swelling. He's currently in stable condition awaiting an additional brain surgery to reapply the removed portion of his skull. The suspect has been charged with Aggravated Battery Causing Serious Bodily Harm and is pending a forthcoming hearing. As a musician, Matthew spends most of his life on tour and unfortunately his medical insurance had lapsed just two months prior to the incident. Friends of the band and the Chicago music community are rallying to help provide for Matthew’s medical needs.

There will be a raffle for tickets:

Individuals can enter the raffle as many times as they wish for $10 each entry. A majority of the venue will be sold to raffle winners, where each winner will receive two tickets to the concert. Tickets are non-transferable and winners must show ID matching their raffle entry. Raffle tickets will be available for sale through Metro's website ONLY beginning Wednesday, July 21st at noon. The raffle will end at 2pm on Saturday July 24th, and winners will be notified via email at 5pm on Saturday July 24, 2010.

There will also be a very limited amount of balcony VIP tickets: These tickets will go onsale for those fans who want to make a larger donation and ensure entry into this special event for $100 each. Balcony VIP tickets will go on sale Wednesday, July 21st at noon at the same location.

A limited amount of soundcheck VIP tickets will be available:

For $500 each, the soundcheck VIP event (approximately 30 minutes), set for the late afternoon, includes a meet and greet/photo with the Pumpkins and merchandise items, plus a seat at a table in the balcony for the show; this package is priced at $500 per person. Soundcheck VIP tickets will also be available Wednesday, July 21st at noon.

Metro is the club where, on October 5, 1988, the Smashing Pumpkins truly landed on the musical map. They also chose the venue for a farewell concert on December 2, 2000, a four-hour-long show that featured 38 songs spanning the group’s career at that time. The Pumpkins have a long history of supporting other Chicago musicians.

While Madina Lake's Matthew Leone remains hospitalized after a brutal attack in Chicago, his prognosis has been improving and the fan and humanitarian support during this difficult time has been both overwhelming and humbling.

Writes Matt's twin brother, singer Nathan Leone: "There’s really no way to appropriately express our appreciation for everyone’s support. We’ve had calls, letters, gifts, and well wishes pouring in from all around the world and it’s truly the most beautiful and genuine show of compassion and love that we’ve ever experienced. we very sincerely thank you all."

While justice will hopefully be served as a man has been arrested in connection with the attack, Nathan continues to keep us updated in his blog on Matthew's condition.

In addition, the band has started a fund to help raise money for the costly hospital bills Matthew's stay and surgeries are incurring. If you would like to donate to help Matthew cover his substantial medical bills, you can do so HERE.
