"Given that DAATH's first full-length, "The Hinderers" was a well-intended, yet ultimately directionless and obviously pieced together foray into the blood-red waters of hybrid-metal, one that even the band themselves would rather see take a dirtnap (let's see who picks up on this one...), I'm not going spend too much dwelling on said disc. I will say that it was at least a decent effort that showed a band with the potential to live up to the hype which was thrust upon them. Well, it may have taken a year and a half, a new singer (Sean Z), the loss of keyboardist Mike Kameron (and with him almost any trace of industrial influence) and the procurement of Kevin Talley's (ex-CHIMAIRA, ex-DYING FETUS, et al.) fulltime services, but through it all, the real DAATH has arrived."

DAATH POSTS NEW TRACK! - NEW VIDEO COMING SOON!

Atlanta-based quintet DAATH has posted the track "Day Of Endless Light" on the band's MySpace page. The song comes off the group's sophomore album, "The Concealers", which is scheduled for release on April 20 in Europe and April 21 in the U.S. through Century Media Records (via a partnership with Roadrunner Records). The CD was produced and mixed by Jason Suecof and Mark Lewis (TRIVIUM, ALL THAT REMAINS, DEVILDRIVER).

DAATH filmed a video for "Day Of Endless Light" last month in the band's hometown with director Robin Fuller (GHOST OF A THOUSAND, SHAPED BY FATE). A photo from the video shoot can be viewed below. More pictures are available at this location.

Commented guitarist Eyal Levi: "I hate music videos. Always have. There's been a few exceptions over the years like the old TOOL videos or WHITE STRIPES videos but for the most part they suck. Especially metal videos. How many times can we watch a group of burly dudes throwing down in a warehouse or abandoned building? With this video that was the LAST thing I wanted for us. I set out to find a team that would give us an actual work of art which could be watched and enjoyed regardless of the music. We ended up with Robin Fuller directing. We chose him because of his amazing animation skills and overall enthusiasm for the vision. The vision was to have a video shot in the style of a Frank Miller film ('Sin City') and have those shots interwoven with the art and design that Jorden Haley has created for us with [the new DAATH album] 'The Concealers'. This will not be your typical metal video."

DAATH will kick off the worldwide touring cycle for this effort on April 15 with a month-long North American trek alongside DRAGONFORCE and CYNIC.

CENTURY MEDIA & ROADRUNNER TEAM UP FOR DAATH!

There are many instances where the media and fans create misconceptions as to what a certain band sounds like or simply get lumped into a genre after numerous tours with artists from the same scene. Well, the Atlanta based quintet DÅÅTH certainly set out with a mission to truly separate themselves from the rest when recording their much anticipated new album, The Concealers, which is nothing but a straight shot of pure, unfiltered American metal at its very best. The dueling guitar virtuosity of Emil Werstler and Eyal Levi harkens many comparisons to Mustaine and Friedman, all the while the acclaimed Kevin Talley (ex-Chimaira) pounds away with fury and precision further proving he is one of the genre’s most accomplished players.

Now, with a dynamic new singer in tow, Century Media Records is proud to announce a worldwide partnership with Roadrunner Records to release DÅÅTH’s new opus, The Concealers, on April 21^st. The Concealers was produced and mixed by Jason Suecof and Mark Lewis (Trivium, All That Remains, Devildriver) and features unparalleled musicianship along with the extraordinary vocals of Sean Z. A new track, titled “Sharpen the Blades,” has been posted online at the official DÅÅTH MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/daath), so head over now to check it out.

Werstler comments: “We mutually agreed that CM would be much more appropriate for the band at this stage, but that nobody felt like it was time to end the relationship with Roadrunner, so we worked out a deal where Roadrunner still makes our records, but CM works them.”

DÅÅTH shot to the forefront of the metal world with the 2007 release of The Hinderers. The band built a worldwide following by touring with the likes of Job For A Cowboy, Devildriver, Unearth, Despised Icon and others while also taking part in the 2007 edition of Ozzfest. After this wrapped and the band underwent some healthy lineup changes, DÅÅTH entered the studio more focused than ever before to begin work on their sophomore album.

DÅÅTH is the brain child of Levi and features amongst its ranks some of the best all around musicians in today’s heavy music scene. Talley comments: “It's amazing that Roadrunner and Century Media are collaborating for the release of our upcoming album because I have been friends with both labels for so many years. I filled in for Suffocation in 1998, played in Chimaira, Devildriver, and now DÅÅTH who were all, at some point on Roadrunner and, over the years, I have gone to many of their international offices. My experience with Century Media dates back to my DYING FETUS and MISERY INDEX days when I would stop by their office and raid the CD warehouse for killer music. I was even wearing a Century Media shirt during my SLAYER audition. Overall, I am stoked because these labels are not only my friends, but they are great labels and I am honored to have their names on the upcoming release.”

Levi further states: “I’m not going to waste your time or insult your intelligence with a plethora of metal words and brutal adjectives about our new album. I’ll just say this: In my opinion this is the first true DÅÅTH record. I think it’s amazing. Any preconceived notions you may have about our band will be destroyed. We came together on this like one five headed, pissed off beast that’s out for blood. Everyone’s strengths shine like never before. It’s the best I’ve ever written and played and it’s the best I’ve ever heard my bandmates write and play. DAATH: KEVIN TALLEY RECORDING VIDEO AND COMMENTARY

"Many people often wonder about writing techniques and how artists go about creating songs. Well there are many different ways but in my experiences, the best way to go about the writing process is to find someone you click with and jam in a room with them. Sure there can be some preliminary recordings with a drum machine but don’t let the initial demo restrict your natural desire to change it. Get in the room and jam it out. Speed it up; slow it down; change the time signatures. The possibilities are endless but don’t get caught up in the rules of writing – just do what feels and sounds good.

Songs are like women… some can be banged out on the first night and others can take weeks to bang out (so I’ve heard). But anything over 3 weeks should be kicked to the curb. “Sharpen the Blades” took a while and was created in several different writing sessions. Emil was messing around with the opening riff for a while and I suggested that we start the song with that riff and I would come in with a blast… No fill – just straight to the blast. The verse riff is a variation of the opening riff but notice the interesting kick drum pattern (turn the music off and sing the drums to yourself). Then we go back to the blast for the pre chorus chuga chuga riff. This pre chorus riff was in a different song that Emil wrote on drum machine and we stole it for this song. I think we were originally “breaking it down” for the chorus but it was too typical so we kept it upbeat and worked on the chorus riff for a while making sure it was simple and effective.

We then decided to do a solo and go half time after the solo. Again, I didn’t want a “break down” fell so I stayed on the ride with a 2 and 4 groove on the bell. I pick up the drums for this next bridge/vocal section where Emil and I originally played a “temp” riff. Later on Eyal wrote a different riff, which fit the song better. After hearing Eyals newer riff, I placed some 6-tuplet bursts on the kick drums. At the end of this vocal bridge we could’ve gone back to the chorus (typical) but we felt it still needed more. In this case I like to play the song from the beginning and then decide where the song should go when we get there. After doing this, we decided to pick up the tempo and do another solo.

This very musical middle section is killer and, like the majority of this record, was mostly written jamming in the room together organically (Yes -- at Wholefoods). Some of the album was written with a drum machine but in my opinion, you should only write on a drum machine if it’s your only option. Finally, we bring it back around to the pre chorus and chorus which is pretty standard. Then we finish the song with the verse riff with half time groove on the drums. It was weird to go back to that riff with the different drumbeat but it sounded good so we kept it. Don’t get caught up in the rules of writing – just do what sounds good to you.

Alas, Sean Z added some punishing vocals and Jeremy wrote some actual bass parts (not just playing the guitar parts all the time) and it was time to move on to the next girl.

Those southern maniacs Daath have gone ahead and created a teaser video for their next album, The Concealers. A ton of you have written into the site over the months asking about it, commented on videos and tracks all over the net, and generally seem pumped for their next release.

Watch the teaser on the Daath Facebook page. While you're at it, add yourself as a fan to the page!

NEW SITE CHANGES!

You may have noticed that over the past few months quiet changes have been made to the site. First we gave you new artist pages. Check out your favorite and you'll find widgets, videos, music, and much more. Plus they look great.

A few weeks back we also updated our Artists page. You'll see highlighted artists up top in blue. These change as artists are updated with news, video, and music. This is a great page to make your first port-of-call after the news section!

Today we've relaunched three other pages. Music and Video are all new. You can now embed all of our music and video posted to the site in your blog, web site, or MySpace/Facebook profiles. At the right of these pages you'll see charts driven by what YOU do on our site. You can also leave comments at all songs and videos, rate them, and favorite them in our new profile system (more on that in a sec).

The Releases page has gotten a huge makeover. Every album now has its own home page where you can see the available tracks, rate it, leave a review, or comment on others' reviews. Snazzy huh?

Finally, we just launched our new profile pages. If you're a subscriber to our email newsletters, you can log in, add your own picture, keep track of the latest updates on our site (and partner sites), follow your favorite videos and music, and tell us what bands you want to hear about.

Of course, many of these new features require that you be a member of the site to use them, so please join today!

EMIL FROM DAATH TALKS GUITARS

Gear talk + Women = You drink alone.

"There have been quite a few comments posted on various websites and message boards concerning Daath's gear and tuning. Hopefully, this blog will inform without scaring away every female in the general vicinity.

This is Brian. He co-owns and runs Elite Music Sales in Montgomery, Alabama. He's pretty much my go-to guy for everything guitar. Not only is he an incredible guitar tech, he's also an amazing player as well as an asshole that makes me laugh a lot.

I generally stop in atleast once between tours. This visit I'm having my 1980 West Street LTD setup, and changing the pickups in my Silverburst Standard.

Not too long ago Winn Krozack and Grover Duvall at PRS guitars dropped this beast on me. At the time I had the idea of doing something different with Daath other than my spruce hollowbody. I wanted something that was equally as organic, but a solid body. I enjoy hearing very non-metal solo tone over an obviously gated/overdriven rhythm. I didnt know exactly what to expect with the West Steet LTD, and the end result was the majority of the solos on The Concealers.

I like to call this finish "Ghetto Sparkles," because I live in a fucking trash can.

The Standard before the pickup change. Yes, that really is Ranch Dressing..

Eyal and I both play 10-46 gauge strings tuned C G C F A D (Drop C). A lot of people get a little caught off guard when I tell them the gauge of strings we play. Just like any other tuning, a guitar is going to respond best by being played with a proper setup. Instead of using extremely thick strings or a hybrid set to compensate for the tone of looseness, I have Brian pay close attention to string height and neck adjustment. It's a balancing act, if you will. My necks are slightly straighter than usual, and in my opinion, low string action is a bigger tone killer than smaller string gauge.

It's safe for me to say that the SC 245 Bass is one of the best neck pickups I've heard in years.

Here I am trying out a couple of different models.

That sums it up. The standard sounds great. Inquiring about pickups is almost like watching the food network and having some crazy-ass like Rachel Ray explain to you how something tastes. Like taste, it's kind of hard to explain sound. In my limited experience it's usually good or bad. The only problem is that I won't settle for anything in between. Fortunately for me, I get great help with the quest for tone from all of the wonderful people at Paul Reed Smith Guitars.

DAATH - ANNOUNCES NEW SINGER!

Georgia-based, forward-thinking metal band Daath, who spent the summer of 2007 kicking up dirt on Ozzfest's side stage, have completed their search for a new vocalist. Daath are pleased to announce Sean Z. as their new frontman.

The band, who parted ways with Sean Faber after Ozzfest, spent the autumn season holding open auditions for the position, with the unwavering goal of finding a diverse singer with enough range and power to match the band's progressive style of metal. Fellow Atlantan Sean Z., who filled in on vocals uring the band's late Fall tour with Dark Funeral, fit the bill. Says drummer Kevin Talley, "Sean Z. brings the whole package and destroys in every aspect of the word. He sounds killer on the new material. Now, we are stronger than ever and we look forward to hitting the road this summer."

Daath are slated to enter the studio on March 1 to record The Concealers with producer Jason Suecof (Trivium, Chimaira) and Mark Lewis of Florida's Audio Hammer studios manning the boards. Guitarist Eyal Levi is thrilled about finally moving forward saying, "We've been biding our time for 4 years in order to be able to finally make an album the right way. We're looking forward to making a record that reflects what Daath is truly about."

Indeed, Daath are a conceptual act, with the lyrics from The Hinderers revolving around the spiritual concept of the Tree of Life/Death. On the forthcoming The Concealers, the band will explore the shadowy world of deception, the forces concealing truth and how the human psyche weaves a web of illusion. With the new vocalist in place and a new album in the works, Daath are more than prepared to expose their brand of thinking man's metal to the masses.

He made a (HILARIOUS) singing/screaming audition video for Daath, which he says, "was inspired by all of the other contestants out there". Jason has worked with bands such as God Forbid, Devil Driver, Bury your Dead, Trivium, If hope dies, Chimaira, Daath, All That Remains, Lennon Murphy and many more as well as countless local acts from a variety of musical styles.
