Killswitch Engage Announce New Singer: Jesse Leach

Killswitch Engage are pleased to announce that they have filled the singer vacancy in the band and they have done so with a familiar face: original vocalist Jesse Leach.

Leach sang on the band's first self-titled album, which came out in 2000, and on their landmark 2002 Roadrunner debut Alive or Just Breathing. He left the band in 2002, but his work on Alive or Just Breathing has always been revered by diehard, longtime KsE fans. Things have come full circle a decade later, and Leach and the band couldn't be more pleased about this reunion.

The band revealed that Leach auditioned for the job he once held and pretty much blew everyone away and then some. The band stated, "After much deliberation and careful consideration, we are pleased to announce that Jesse Leach has rejoined Killswitch Engage. Our job was to find the best person to fill Howard's shoes: a decision based on talent and not familiarity."

The band further said, "Truth be told, Jesse blew us away in auditions. The room seemed charged with electricity. He commanded both new and old material, and proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he wanted to do this. The choice became very clear and apparent."

The band also is psyched to share the news with fans, saying, "This change is very exciting. We know you're going to love it. This is truly a new era in KsE history and it is ready to shred your face off. So, please help us in welcoming Jesse back into the KsE family; he is a rare and great talent, a fact that older KsE fans have known for years. Here is to a killer new record and a bright future. The five of us cannot wait to write this record and play shows together and bring that feeling to our fans. It's been far too long."

The "new" guy himself also commented on his return to the band after a decade-long absence, saying, "It is a great honor to rejoin my brothers after all of these years. After some discussion and much reflection, it was obvious to me this was the path I was meant to take. We got together and jammed on the 'Howard-era' songs, as well as some Alive or Just Breathing-era songs and we all felt the synergy."

He continued, "I look forward to writing the new record, since the demos sound absolutely amazing, as well as breathing new life and getting comfortable with the soulful songs Howard has written. It is a new chapter of my life filled with new and exciting challenges. I will give all that I can to honor the position I have been given and take nothing for granted. I will sing every note with all of my soul. I am very blessed and very thankful to be back in the KsE family! All things happen in their due time and now is the time for this reunion and new direction."

KsE remain hard at work on their latest album, which follows 2009's second self-titled album.

The band will perform at the New England Metal and Hardcore Fest on April 22, 2012. Leach last performed with KsE in March 2010 in New York City, Clifford Park, NY, and Wallingford CT.

Tour dates are as follows:

4/22 Worcester, MA @ Palladium (New England Metal and Hardcore Festival)
6/1-6/3 Rock Am Ring/Rock Im Park
6/8 Nickelsdorf, Austria @ Pannonia Fields II (Nova Rock)
6/15 Copenhagen, Denmark (Copenhell)
6/16 Gothenburg, Sweden (Metaltown)
6/22 Milan, Italy @ Arena Fiera Milano (Gods Of Metal)
6/24 Dessel, Belgium @ Festival Park ‘Stenehel’ (Grasspop)

More tour dates will be announced shortly.

13 Of Roadrunner's Wildest Covers

At their worst, cover songs are lazy album filler. At their best, they can eclipse even the best original material. Covers are a chance for bands to cut loose and have fun by digging into the catalogs of their idols and influences, and once in a while, they result in something so awesomely unexpected or incongruous that the cover song becomes a staple of their catalog. Everyone with an iPod and an idea has put together a playlist of favorite cover songs; we here at Roadrunner have saved you the time and effort of making one for our stable of artists by doing the work for you. Here, in chronological order, are Roadrunner’s wildest cover songs: enjoy our bands slipping into someone else’s clothes.

Wanna listen as you read? Check these tracks out on Spotify!

Sepultura, Motörhead’s “Orgasmatron”, 1991
Now a stone classic, “Orgasmatron” was only six years old when Max Cavalera picked it as the only cover on Sepultura's Arise. But he knew a perfect fit when he heard one: the band maintains the original’s punishing strut, while Max’s vocals replace Lemmy’s cruel snarl with a cutting, martial bark.

Type O Negative, Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze”, 1993
Cover songs—both deranged and sincere—were part of the Type O Negative experience, both live and on record. This swirling, gothed-up version of Seals & Crofts' mellow soft-rock staple from 1972, with front man Peter Steele laying on his thickest undead croon, might be the best of the lot.

Fear Factory, Gary Numan’s “Cars”, 1998
Entering the realms of the truly odd, we find Fear Factory taking a stab at Gary Numan’s New Wave synth-pop classic (as a bonus track on Obsolete)—and somehow roping Numan into participating as well. Odder still is how faithful it is to the original. Oddest of all? It works.

Coal Chamber, Peter Gabriel’s “Shock the Monkey”, 1999
Coal Chamber didn’t share much with art-rock pioneer Peter Gabriel besides a morbid sense of theatricality, but with “Shock the Monkey”, they had a ringer on their hands. Still, they took no chances: they brought in Ozzy Osbourne to handle backing vocals, and the result was their mainstream breakthrough.

Opeth, Deep Purple’s “Soldier of Fortune”, 2005
Given Mikael Åkerfeldt’s idolization of Deep Purple, you might think the only problem with this cover (from the deluxe edition of Opeth's Ghost Reveries) is that it might be too on the nose. But it avoids that pitfall, remaining a faithful cover while adding a new element: Åkerfeldt’s unexpectedly soulful vocals. Indeed, this cover is a strong signpost pointing to the '70s-influenced prog direction the band explored on their latest album, Heritage.

Trivium, Metallica’s “Master of Puppets”, 2006
When Kerrang! asked eight bands to cover a song from Metallica’s Master of Puppets album for its 20th anniversary, Trivium got the best—and hardest—of the lot. They acquitted themselves honorably, with Matt Heafy’s already Hetfield-esque vocals complemented by sharper, rougher guitars that make the song even more sinister.

Stone Sour, Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game”, 2006
Here’s a real curiosity: Corey Taylor takes on Chris Isaak’s smooth, sexed-up ballad of regret and desire, in an all-acoustic arrangement. In a bonus track for Stone Sour’s Come What(ever) May, Taylor manages to strip the song to its barest bones, but loses none of the intensity he’s known for.

Killswitch Engage, Dio’s “Holy Diver”, 2006
Taking on a legendary song requires stones big enough to seal a tomb, and metal songs don’t come much more legendary than “Holy Diver”. Whatever else you can say about Killswitch Engage, though, they never lack for brass, and they throw themselves into the deathless Dio classic with total commitment.

Megadeth, Led Zeppelin’s “Out on the Tiles”, 2007
On Megadeth's terrific United Abominations album, Dave Mustaine accessed his bluesier side by covering a heavy deep cut from Led Zeppelin III. The tremendously filthy guitar playing (including a "Kashmir" outro!) transforms the song into almost a Megadeth original. (Note: This song is not currently on Spotify, but we're working on it.)

3 Inches of Blood, Lucifer’s Friend’s “In the Time of Job When Mammon Was a Yippie”, 2007
In addition to having the greatest title, this cut from the Trial of Champions EP may just be the most fun cover song on this list. Reworking a song by the nearly-forgotten German prog-metal outfit Lucifer’s Friend, 3 Inches of Blood goes absolutely gonzo, and the result is a cover impossible not to love.

Dream Theater, King Crimson’s “Lark’s Tongues in Aspic Part II”, 2009
Speaking of prog... Cover songs are fundamental to the Dream Theater live experience; the band is never afraid to break out a cover, be it goofy or ambitious. The special edition of Black Clouds & Silver Linings came with an entire EP of covers, including this go-for-broke version of a daunting prog masterpiece.

DevilDriver, Iron Maiden’s “Wasted Years”, 2009
DevilDriver normally doesn’t traffic in cover songs, so it’s all the more surprising that they took on a band as iconic as Iron Maiden for another Kerrang! compilation. It’s somewhat jarring, given the two bands' radically different guitar and vocal styles, but in the end, it’s a solid modernization of a great original.

Machine Head, Judas Priest’s “The Sentinel”, 2011
Covering Judas Priest is the metal equivalent of running a marathon: you better be in good shape before you even try it. After training for almost two decades, Machine Head was finally ready, releasing a razor-sharp cover of this monster-of-the-week deep cut as a bonus track on Unto the Locust.

Want to hear these covers for yourself? Check 'em out on Spotify!

Rush, Soulfly, Gojira And Killswitch Engage Among Revolver's Most Anticipated Releases Of 2012

Revolver magazine has posted its list of the Most Anticipated Albums of 2012 - and Gojira, Killswitch Engage, Rush and Soulfly are all included!

The editors say about Gojira's still-untitled Roadrunner debut, "It's no secret that we love environmentally minded prog-death outfit Gojira over here at Revolver. We've been championing the French 'green metal' crushers ever since we heard the behemoth opening track of their 2005 opus, From Mars to Sirius. Their first record on new label Roadrunner, Album No. 5 should hit like a force of nature."

Regarding Killswitch Engage's next release, they say: "In mid-December, Killswitch Engage guitarist Mike D’Antonio posted on his Facebook page that the metalcore band was convening around Christmastime to write a new record. He added, 'Even Howard is coming,' referring to frontman Howard Jones, who had missed some of the group’s 2010 shows, supposedly due to back pain. Then, on January 5, the band announced Jones had left the band citing personal reasons as the cause. Their statement said, 'He has left big shoes to fill, so we certainly have our work cut out for us to find the next singer of Killswitch, something we plan on making priority #1 going forward.' So we’re still holding onto our hopes that there will be a new Killswitch record in 2012."

Revolver's as excited about a new Rush album as pretty much everyone else in the world of rock; they say, "In the time since Canada’s best progressive hard-rock power trio released their last disc, 2007′s Snakes and Arrows, they’ve celebrated their 40th anniversary and seen their story told in the documentary Beyond the Lighted Stage. For their 19th(!) LP, they’ve worked with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Evanescence, Alice in Chains) and written songs—two titles of which have been released, 'Caravan' and 'BU2B'—which guitarist Alex Lifeson describes as 'very dynamic.'"

They're also looking forward to Soulfly's upcoming Enslaved, about which they say, "Between Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy, and his new band with Dillinger Escape Plan’s Greg Puciato, former Sepultura frontman Max Cavalera apparently does not sleep. Which is fine by us considering the consistent ferocity of his output. This eighth Soulfly album comes out as the band celebrated its 15th anniversary and features guest turns by Dez Fafara of DevilDriver/Coal Chamber and Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation. Sounds like it should be too much brutal goodness for us to refuse or resist."

Read the whole thing!

Howard Jones Speaks Out About Leaving Killswitch Engage

Howard Jones has posted a message on Killswitch Engage's Facebook page explaining the reasons behind his departure from the group, announced earlier this week. The message reads as follows:

"Message From Howard: Well, I guess I will shed a little light without going too deep. As some of you may know, I've had a pretty interesting couple of years to say the least battling with some personal issues. One of the low points being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes that went unchecked for years. The rest of the band stuck with me through it, and to be honest they are the ones that kept me going. The whole experience definitely put a scare in me.

"Recently we've all been in writing mode but somehow I couldn't get excited about the new album and all the touring that would go with it. The guys saw it before I did. In hindsight I now realize that my heart wasn't in it. I have had an amazing decade with KSE. I love Justin, MikeD, Joel and Adam for hanging in there and standing by me no matter how bad it was. I have so many good memories, and those are the ones that I will keep. Will I be involved in music again? Sure, I have been in bands for a little over half my life, can't stop now. Until then, get the new KSE album, it's going to be good. Thanks everyone for letting me try to entertain you, and I wish myself well in my future endeavors. Gone fishin' Howard"

Howard Jones Leaves Killswitch Engage

The members of Killswitch Engage posted the following message on their Facebook page today:

"To our family, friends and fans: We have decided to continue on without Howard Jones as the singer of Killswitch Engage. We love Howard and are thankful for the nine years that we've had him in the band. Out of respect for everyone involved we will not be discussing the specific reasons behind this decision. Howard is a part of our family and always will be, and we wish him well. He has left big shoes to fill, so we certainly have our work cut out for us to find the next singer of Killswitch, something we plan on making priority #1 going forward. Most importantly, thanks to all of you for all the support throughout the years and for sticking by us for all this time. We really do appreciate it and we very much look forward to having a new record for all of you in the not too distant future that we can all be proud of. Sincerely, Adam, Joel, Mike & Justin."

Times of Grace announce new Massachusetts guitar giant as their bassist for upcoming tour...

We all know Times of Grace as the latest metal force from Killswitch Engage former singer Jesse Leach and current Killswitch guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz. We are pleased to announce that Matt Bachand, guitarist extraordinaire of Shadows Fall, will serve as the touring bassist for the band’s upcoming trek across Europe as well as its much anticipated return to the US. Times of Grace will serve as main support for Underoath on the forthcoming American trek dubbed “Illuminato(u)r.”

Since Shadows Fall have toured with Killswitch Engage many times and since both bands came up together in the burgeoning Massachusetts metal scene in the early part of the ‘00s, it makes complete sense for Bachand to strap on the bass and step into this role. Bachand is taking over for Daniel Struble, who is unable to make the particular road trip due to personal matters he must imminently address. Struble, who was a member of KsE’s one-time labelmates Five Pointe O, played bass on the band’s first-ever US tour last Winter. Guitarist Joel Stroetzel, also of KsE, and drummer Dan Gluszak constitute the rest of the touring lineup for these upcoming treks. Clearly, it remains all in the family for Times of Grace.

“Losing Daniel was a blow to the Times of Grace camp, but we knew he had to do what was best for him and his family,” said Leach. “Having Matt show interest in joining the touring lineup could not have been a better fit! I have been a fan of Matt's voice and guitar work for many years. I am honored and very stoked to have him join us on tour to play bass and sing backup vocals. Matt is a great guy, and someone Adam, Joel and I have all known for years. Personality-wise and as a musician, it clicks so well.
Time of Grace To Tour With Underoath! Dates Are Now Posted

Time of Grace featuring Adam Dutkiewicz (Killswitch Engage) and Jesse Leach (ex-Killswitch Engage) are hitting the road with Underoath this summer. Check out the press release and tour dates.

New York, NY: Open your mind and your eyes, hard rock fans! You are about to be illuminated this summer, thanks to the "Illuminato(u)r," a brand new road trek featuring some of the best and, well, brightest bands in the scene! Underoath will headline "Illuminato(u)r," with support provided by a stellar lineup that includes Times of Grace, Stray From the Path and Letlive. The lineup was announced yesterday on www.underoath777.com, along with the premiere of the band's new video for the song "Paper Lung." Excitement and buzz about the tour has already been ramped up and is steadily building online and beyond.

Multi Grammy nominated, globally successful and acclaimed heavy rock group Underoath was transformed by the arrival of new drummer Daniel Davison. Underoath – Tim McTague (guitars), Spencer Chamberlain (vocals), Grant Brandell (bass), Chris Dudley (keyboards) and James Smith (guitars) -- recently released the album Ø (Disambiguation) that emphatically surpasses, in terms of craftsmanship and cohesion, its predecessors, which combined have sold well over 1 million copies.

Times of Grace is a new project featuring Killswitch Engage guitarist (and super producer) Adam Dutkiewicz, who reteams with original KsE vocalist Jesse Leach. Their debut, The Hymn of a Broken Man, finds the duo capitalizing on their past chemistry and creating something entirely new and exciting. Outburn called the album “unequivocally one of the finest records you’ll hear this year….a truly stunning achievement,” handing it a 10 out of 10 rating!

Underoath guitarist Tim McTague said, "We are super excited to be touring with Times of Grace, Stray From the Path and Letlive. This is one of the better musical packages we have put together in a long time and think across the board it will be a great experience."

Times of Grace vocalist Jesse Leach also commented, "I have always admired what Underoath does. I am quite pleased to have the honor to share the stage with a band that has pushed boundaries and maintained integrity all of these years. I believe on and off stage this will be a tour to remember. It's a great mix of music and spirit not to be missed."

The tour winds through the country for a little over a month, kicking off on July 5th in Raleigh, North Carolina and wraps on August 12th in Columbus, Ohio.

Learn more about the tour by going here and follow the before, during and after happenings on Twitter with @illuminatour.

Guess Who's Joining Times of Grace's Touring Lineup?

Times of Grace are excited to announce they have solidified the touring lineup for their forthcoming debut tour this February. The core of the band is Jesse Leach on vocals and Adam Dutkiewicz on guitars/vocals, and they will be supported by guitarist Joel Stroetzel, bassist Daniel Struble and drummer Dan Gluszak.

Stroetzel is a familiar name to Times of Grace fans, as he is also guitarist for Killswitch Engage, alongside Adam D., and is an original member who played with Leach while he was singing in KsE. Stroetzel’s involvement in Times of Grace was a happy accident, as he assisted his former and current bandmates when they recorded acoustic performances for iTunes and SiriusXM’s Liquid Metal late last year. Times of Grace were on the hunt for a live guitarist and Stroetzel just clicked, so he decided to once again pitch in for his friends and act as their touring guitarist. Struble is the former singer of Five Pointe O, a long ago labelmate of KsE, while Gluszak is the former drummer of Envy on the Coast.

“I am honored to work with such quality people and solid musicians and I can already see the synergy developing and it is very exciting. I truly feel blessed,” Leach said about the touring lineup.

Times of Grace will embark on their first tour on February 1st in Baltimore and wrap on February 27th in Boston. The band’s tour itinerary is as follows.

Feb. 01 Baltimore, MD @ The Quarter
Feb.02 Atlanta, GA @ the Masquerade (downstairs)
Feb. 04 Dallas, TX @ The Door
Feb. 05 Austin, TX @ Emo's
Feb. 07 Phoenix, AZ @ The Nile
Feb. 08 Los Angeles, CA @ Troubadour
Feb. 09 San Francisco, CA@ Bottom of the Hill
Feb. 11 Seattle, WA @ El Corazon
Feb. 12 Portland, OR @ Hawthorne Ballroom
Feb. 14 Salt Lake City, UT @ The Complex - Grand Room
Feb. 15 Denver, CO @ Marquis Theater
Feb. 17 Minneapolis, MN @ Station 4
Feb. 18 Chicago, IL @ The Bottom Lounge
Feb. 19 Detroit, MI @ Eagle Theater
Feb. 20 Cleveland, OH @ Beachland Ballroom
Feb. 21 Toronto, ON @ Mod Club
Feb. 22 New York, NY @ Gramercy Theater
Feb. 24 West Chester, PA @ The Note
Feb. 25 Pittsburgh, PA @ Mr. Smalls
Feb. 26 Poughkeepsie, NY @ The Chance
Feb. 27 Boston, MA @ Paradise Rock Club

Please visit the official Times of Grace web site for ticketing info.

Below is a sampling of what the press is saying about Times of Grace’s universally praised The Hymn of a Broken Man, which came out last Tuesday. <a href="http://store.roadrunnerrecords.com/artists/Times-Of-Grace?partner=roadrunner" target="_self" title="Times of Grace The Hymn of a Broken man for sale at our store. From the pointed explorations of darkness to the incendiary metallic incisions, The Hymn of a Broken Man has all the trappings of a classic metal album…Times of Grace are the future. Let the new age begin.” –ARTISTdirect.com (5 out of 5 stars)

“An album that combines raging Killswitch-style metalcore with more melody and atmospheric moments.” –Guitar World

“It is unequivocally one of the finest records you’ll hear this year….a truly stunning achievement.” –Outburn (10 out of 10 rating)

“It’s a heavy and eclectic record that augments Dutkiewicz’s signature metalcore with atmospheric hard rock and moody pop.” –Revolver
