Soulfly's Max Cavalera Interviewed In Australia

Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera was recently interviewed by the Australian website MetalObsession.net when he was in Australia with his other band, Cavalera Conspiracy. He talked about the forthcoming Soulfly album Enslaved, how the new lineup came together, and more.

Says Cavalera, "This new Soulfly album, Enslaved, is its own thing. It's definitely a Soulfly record because all the trademarks are there, but it's probably the most extreme so far. I'm very proud of that. I specifically hand picked death metal orientated riffs and beats, because David Kinkade comes from a death metal school of drumming and he can play that stuff really well...I made those beats and those specific parts with David in mind, so the new Soulfly album could be the most extreme we have ever written. I mean, take "World Scum" for example. That's probably the most extreme song that I've ever done and I'm very happy that's the first single. It announces the record in a great way, it's so heavy and so brutal. It's like 'YES! We're back with a vengeance.'

Regarding the selection of new bassist Tony Campos and new drummer David Kinkade, he says, "Tony is a guy I was in contact with during a Static-X tour with Soulfly a couple of years ago. Tony used to come sing with us all the time doing backing vocals and he is a really cool guy. I saw Tony perform with Prong and I knew he was playing with Ministry as well. I thought he’d be a great bass player to have on the record and I approached him and asked if he’d like to be apart of the new Soulfly lineup and he loved the idea. From the beginning, he liked the idea of being in the band and accepted pretty much straight away...David was a little different. David came in contact with me via email. He said he was an extreme death metal drummer and played with a Norwegian black metal band called Borknagar. He sent me over some tracks and they sounded killer. Blast beats and stuff like that. At the time I thought I’d really like to try something really brutal for the new record. I originally had the idea to make an extreme kind of record, so I flew David to jam with me in Phoenix, Arizona. As soon as we started jamming we locked in perfectly. He played the double bass while I played a couple of the riffs and I thought we were on the same page. So perfect."

EXCLUSIVE: The Killing Road - A History Of Megadeth's Opening Acts

Back in the day, back when a Big 4 show was nothing but a fanboy's dream, three of the most important thrash metal bands of all time teamed up for a monumental tour called Clash of the Titans. The US version of the trek featured Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax as rotating co-headliners, playing huge venues across America in 1991, still part of the Rust in Peace era to Megadeth fans.

In interviews at the time, Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine was often asked which band he thought benefitted the most from the tour. His response included three simple words: "Alice in Chains." Yes, when Death Angel reportedly had to turn down the opening slot, the Clash of the Titans organizers turned to a then-little-known Seattle band who had a tough time warming up the thrash-friendly crowds.

Alice in Chains weren't the only band to go on to massive heights of fame and fortune after supporting the world's "state of the art speed metal band," as Megadeth was often billed. Stone Temple Pilots found themselves in the same position in 1993. A few years before their gold-selling Obsolete, in 1995, Fear Factory joined a Megadeth bill that also included a new band called Korn. From Coal Chamber to Machine Head, the list of Roadrunner luminaries alone who've supported Megadeth is astounding.

With the 2012 edition of the Mustaine-curated Gigantour rolling out January 26 with a badass undercard consisting of Motörhead, Volbeat and Lacuna Coil, we're taking a look back down "The Killing Road" at some of the coolest 'Deth openers from within our own catalog.

KORN (1995)
FEAR FACTORY (1995, 2005)
Megadeth's "Reckoning Day 1995" lineup: Korn, Flotsam and Jetsam, Fear Factory. Yes, as Megadeth toured supporting Youthanasia, they assembled a package that began with Fear Factory, who were promoting the groundbreaking Demanufacture. They were preceded by Flotsam and Jetsam, the Arizona thrashers best remembered as the band Jason Newsted played in before Metallica. And first up, there was Korn, who had somehow managed to combine Faith No More, broken childhoods and Bakersfield, California with who knows what else, creating a brand-new sound that changed heavy music both artistically and commercially for years to come. Jonathan Davis broke out his now-signature bagpipes during that tour.

"At the time, no one knew where to put us, so we were doing tours with KMFDM to Megadeth [to] Pennywise," Davis told Explore Music in an interview last year. Fear Factory came back to join Megadeth on the first ever Gigantour a decade later.

COAL CHAMBER (1997)
LIFE OF AGONY (1997, 2005)

During the glory years of nu-metal, Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares helped make the Roadrunner A&R team aware of the L.A. band Coal Chamber, who released their eponymous debut in February, 1997. About a year later, Coal Chamber went on tour with Megadeth, who were supporting Cryptic Writings, which had spawned the rock radio hit "Trust."

Coal Chamber's first album, one of the definitive releases of the nu-metal subgenre, eventually went gold in the United States. Years later, following subsequent Coal Chamber albums that further explored the band's darkly Gothic undertones, frontman Dez Fafara returned to Roadrunner with the ferocious extreme metal band DevilDriver, who toured supporting Megadeth as well.

"I've had the pleasure of touring with Megadeth a few times in my career,” recalls Fafara. “I must say that in my case, both bands were treated with kindness and respect and taken care of well. But here is something you don't expect from one of the biggest rock stars of our time. On the second night [of Megadeth/Coal Chamber], as I was walking in the building, I slipped on some ice. At first I tried to laugh it off, but as I stood up, I realized that something bad had happened to my ankle: it was horribly twisted.

"It wasn't broken, but it was not good and it was swelling fast. I hobbled backstage to ice it and was doing so for an hour before the show. A half hour before Coal Chamber took the stage, in walks Dave Mustaine. He kneels down and says, 'I heard you messed up your ankle pretty bad. Let me look at it.'" Dez says that Mustaine "sent out for some holistic ointment" and 15 minutes later he was back, personally wrapping the astonished singer's ankle himself. "[Mustaine] told me to try and have a good show. His kindness that day meant the world to me and now, 13 years later, I'll never forget it! Thanks, Dave, for being a brother."

Life of Agony opened the tour that featured Coal Chamber, and rejoined Megadeth in 2005 on the first Gigantour.

DREAM THEATER (2005)
Dream Theater also played the inaugural Gigantour in 2005, which featured Anthrax (on a separate leg), Fear Factory, Dillinger Escape Plan and Nevermore, two members of whom were in Sanctuary, whose debut album was produced by Mustaine back in the day.

Shawn Drover, who took over drum duties in Megadeth in 2004, continues to feel a strong personal connection to his current labelmates. "I have a lot of great memories from all the Gigantour tours Megadeth have done and having my friends in Dream Theater on G1 is certainly one of them. Progressive metal is something I really enjoy, as the level of musicianship—and certainly in the case of Dream Theater—is very high. To be able to pull off live what they have recorded over the years is something I marvel at, for sure."

Dream Theater’s then-drummer, Mike Portnoy, joined Megadeth onstage on September 3, 2005 at the Toronto Gigantour stop. He got behind the kit for "Peace Sells...," with Shawn switching to guitar. As revealed on the subsequent Gigantour DVD, Portnoy dumped baby powder on the snare before he left the stage. As soon as Drover started playing "Holy Wars...," the powder blew all over his face.

"Great band, great guys, end of story," Drover says.

OPETH (2006)
Dave Mustaine and Mikael Åkerfeldt certainly have a lot in common. They both sing, they both play guitar, they've both fronted monumentally game-changing metal bands and they have both navigated lineup changes and changing times while maintaining a vision as creative bandleaders that has ensured each man's musical legacy. The pair finally shared a touring bill together in 2006, when Opeth took part in the second Gigantour alongside Lamb of God, Arch Enemy and Overkill.

SOULFLY (2006)
Max Cavalera is a heavy metal legend in his own right, from the noisy thrash of early Sepultura to the landmark Arise album, the hugely influential Chaos AD, the hugely influential all over again Roots and continuing through to his eight albums fronting Soulfly along with all of his other projects. Despite his own iconic status, he still counts Megadeth as a major inspiration to him.

"I still love the classics like Megadeth, Slayer and all those bands that are still playing now with kick-ass shit after twenty or thirty years," he told MetalSucks.net last year. "That's awesome that those bands are still playing. It makes me really proud and makes me want to continue playing because it's an inspiration that those bands are still going."

Also, did you know David Ellefson played bass on nearly half of Soulfly’s 2004 album, Prophecy? He was still a few years away from rejoining Megadeth, though, when Soulfly were added to the Australian edition of Gigantour in 2006.

MACHINE HEAD (2007, 2009, 2011)
Bay Area metal warriors Machine Head have toured with Megadeth on several occasions, including as direct support on Megadeth/Slayer, on the 2011 Rockstar Mayhem Festival tour, and when both supported Heaven & Hell, aka Black Sabbath with the late Ronnie James Dio.

In 2009, speaking about The Blackening touring cycle, Machine Head's Robb Flynn told About.com: "We got to tour with a lot of our idols. We did Slayer and Megadeth, we did six months with Metallica... There were some huge moments for us."

Shawn Drover is quite fond of Flynn and his crew as well, calling them "definitely one of my favorite heavy metal bands of today."

"We have played a ton of shows with Machine Head since 2007, which was great for me as I am friends with all those dudes," Drover says. "One of the great things about Machine Head is that they completely have their own sound. I have not heard one band that sounds like they do, which in this day and age, seems rare. They are a very consistent live band as well."

Roadrunner Musicians Appearing At NAMM 2012

NAMM, the National Association of Music Merchants, is having its annual convention this weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, and members of DevilDriver, Korn, Megadeth and Soulfly will be appearing there this weekend.

Michael Spreitzer and Jeff Kendrick of DevilDriver will be performing for Blackstar Amplification on Friday, January 20 from 4:30 - 5 PM. The event will be held at the KORG performance stage located at booth #6440 in Hall A.

Korn drummer Ray Luzier will be signing at the Pro-Mark Drumsticks booth at 3 PM, and at the Remo Drumheads booth at 4:30 PM on Friday, January 20, and at 1 PM at the Prentice Practice Pads booth on Saturday, January 21. Also, look for Ray demoing new cymbals and drums at the Sabian, Pearl and DW booths Friday and Saturday and a signing at the Sticks and Skins booth (to be announced).

Soulfly's New Album Cover, Lineup Revealed!

Soulfly's new album, Enslaved, will be released March 13, 2012. The cover, designed by Marcelo Vasco, is above. The band's lineup now includes bassist Tony Campos, formerly of Static-X, and drummer David Kinkade, formerly of Borknagar, alongside frontman Max Cavalera and guitarist Marc Rizzo. You can see a photo of the new lineup below.

As is customary with Soulfly, the band will introduce some new and unexpected elements into the mix, including a guest violinist. Soulfly also collaborates with two metal veterans on the new record: Dez Fafara of DevilDriver and Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation. Ryan said it was "an honor to receive a call from someone you had pictures of on your wall as a kid."

Rush, Soulfly, Gojira And Killswitch Engage Among Revolver's Most Anticipated Releases Of 2012

Revolver magazine has posted its list of the Most Anticipated Albums of 2012 - and Gojira, Killswitch Engage, Rush and Soulfly are all included!

The editors say about Gojira's still-untitled Roadrunner debut, "It's no secret that we love environmentally minded prog-death outfit Gojira over here at Revolver. We've been championing the French 'green metal' crushers ever since we heard the behemoth opening track of their 2005 opus, From Mars to Sirius. Their first record on new label Roadrunner, Album No. 5 should hit like a force of nature."

Regarding Killswitch Engage's next release, they say: "In mid-December, Killswitch Engage guitarist Mike D’Antonio posted on his Facebook page that the metalcore band was convening around Christmastime to write a new record. He added, 'Even Howard is coming,' referring to frontman Howard Jones, who had missed some of the group’s 2010 shows, supposedly due to back pain. Then, on January 5, the band announced Jones had left the band citing personal reasons as the cause. Their statement said, 'He has left big shoes to fill, so we certainly have our work cut out for us to find the next singer of Killswitch, something we plan on making priority #1 going forward.' So we’re still holding onto our hopes that there will be a new Killswitch record in 2012."

Revolver's as excited about a new Rush album as pretty much everyone else in the world of rock; they say, "In the time since Canada’s best progressive hard-rock power trio released their last disc, 2007′s Snakes and Arrows, they’ve celebrated their 40th anniversary and seen their story told in the documentary Beyond the Lighted Stage. For their 19th(!) LP, they’ve worked with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Evanescence, Alice in Chains) and written songs—two titles of which have been released, 'Caravan' and 'BU2B'—which guitarist Alex Lifeson describes as 'very dynamic.'"

They're also looking forward to Soulfly's upcoming Enslaved, about which they say, "Between Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy, and his new band with Dillinger Escape Plan’s Greg Puciato, former Sepultura frontman Max Cavalera apparently does not sleep. Which is fine by us considering the consistent ferocity of his output. This eighth Soulfly album comes out as the band celebrated its 15th anniversary and features guest turns by Dez Fafara of DevilDriver/Coal Chamber and Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation. Sounds like it should be too much brutal goodness for us to refuse or resist."

Watch Soulfly's New Drummer Play His Second Show Ever With The Band!

Soulfly's newest member, drummer Dave Kinkade, made his live debut with the band this past week; below, you can see drum-cam footage of him at the annual D-Low Memorial Show in Phoenix, Arizona on December 30.

Kinkade posted this footage to his personal YouTube account, noting that the song "Porrada" was added to the set list at the last minute so he was reading the tabs for it as he played.

Max Cavalera Talks Songwriting, Recording In New Interview

Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy frontman Max Cavalera was recently interviewed by The Scream Queen; during the course of the conversation, he talks about the band's working methods in the studio, songwriting, and more.

Says Max about maintaining a live energy in the studio, "It's tricky, but there's ways to do it. A lot of times, just get everybody pumped up, the whole band, and we write a kick ass song, everybody feels really killer. And then you, normally, when you just make it, you imagine how this part's going to be when we play live! And it's 'Hell yeah! We're going to fuck shit up, you know, we're going to turn it up when we play this live!'...But in the studio atmosphere, it's a little - yeah, like you said, kind of cold, because there's only four walls, and you don't have a crowd there. So you have to imagine how it's going to be when it eventually hits the fans and when they get it, when we play it in front of them, how killer it will be. So, you have to be creative, use the imagination kind of thing."

Regarding his songwriting process, he says, "I write all of the riffs before I enter the studio, so I just sit down with my guitar and four-track machine and drum machine, and write the majority of the stuff and then I put that on the CD and I send that to Igor [Cavalera, drummer] and Marc [Rizzo, guitarist] and they all get the CD with fifteen songs - almost complete songs. And then we take that CD to the studio and we make that CD into kind of the guide of what we use every day. We pick a song off of that CD and make it into a real song."

Soulfly To Release New Album In March!

Soulfly will release their eighth studio album, Enslaved, on March 13, 2012, marking their 15th anniversary as a band at the same time. The lineup on Enslaved features frontman Max Cavalera and guitarist Marc Rizzo, with Static-X's Tony Campos taking up the bass and brand-new drummer David Kinkade taking over behind the kit.

Enslaved was recorded at Tallcat Studios in Phoenix, Arizona and was produced by Zeuss, in collaboration with Max Cavalera.

As is customary with Soulfly, the band will introduce some new and unexpected elements into the mix, including a guest violinist. Soulfly also collaborates with two metal veterans: Dez Fafara of DevilDriver and Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation. Ryan said it was "an honor to receive a call from someone you had pictures of on your wall as a kid."

Cavalera also wrote a song "Revengeance" about his slain stepson Dana, whose death was the catalyst for the creation of Soulfly. He partners with his sons Igor and Richie on vocals, while his other son Zyon plays drums. It is the first time he has performed with three of his sons.

The band tracked 14 songs, 11 of which will be on the standard edition of Enslaved, with the other three appearing on the special edition. Track titles are as follows: "Resistance," "World Scum," "Intervention," "Gladiator," "Legions," "American Steel," "Redemption of Man by God," "Treachery," "Plata o Plomo," "Revengeance," "Chains," "Slave," "Bastards" and "Soulfly VIII." Please note, this is not the final track sequence.

Soulfly Announces 15th Annual D-Low Show

Soulfly will be headlining the 15th annual D-Low Memorial Show at the Marquee Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona on Friday, December 30. Also appearing on the bill will be Incite and Lody Kong. The show is held every year in memory of Max Cavalera's stepson, Dana Wells, who was killed in a 1996 car accident. In 2004, the band recorded part of their The Song Remains Insane DVD at the show.

Soulfly will also be playing at the Viper Room in Hollywood, CA the night before the D-Low show, on Thursday, December 29.

Vocalist Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation has recorded a guest vocal for the next Soulfly album, which will be out in 2012. Said Ryan, "It's an honor to receive a call from someone you had pictures of on your wall as a kid asking you to be on a new album of theirs. I literally had a picture of Max and Gloria [Max's wife and manager] holding [Gloria's son] Richie in her arms that I ripped out of a copy of Metal Maniacs on my wall when I was 15 or 16. Now they're asking for my artistic hand in one of their creations; [it] just doesn't get much more surreal than that. Very honored and the song is very 'death metal-ish' and completely crushes. Happy to be a part of it!"

Painter Franck De Las Mercedes Pays Tribute To Latinos In Metal

Nicaraguan-born, New York City-based artist Franck de las Mercedes has begun a new series of paintings under the heading "A Quiet Riot: Latinos Making Noise in Hard Rock and Heavy Metal." For decades, Latinos have been a vital part of the worldwide metal scene, including many who never make their cultural identity an explicit part of their musical persona (like, who knew Stryper's Oz Fox was Latino?) and many who do - like Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy leader Max Cavalera, pictured above.

Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy frontman Max Cavalera was interviewed at the latter band's Fort Lauderdale, Florida tour stop by Ipek, frontwoman of the band Wykked Wytch and host of the Witching Hour on Metal Messiah Radio. The video below includes discussion of the difference between Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy songs, as well as some information straight from Max about the upcoming Soulfly album, which will be released sometime in early 2012. EXCLUSIVE: Max Cavalera In Studio With Dillinger Escape Plan's Greg Puciato

Soulfly/Cavalera Conspiracy frontman Max Cavalera spent the weekend at his compound in Arizona, working on new material for an unnamed, no-further-details-available project (that means we don’t have a band name, let alone anything like a street date, so don’t ask) with Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Greg Puciato (who provided guest vocals on the song "Rise of the Fallen," from Soulfly's Omen). Puciato was first to break the news, posting the photo above on his personal site, gregpuciato.com, and then writing the following on Facebook:

"Day two out here on this writing session with Max. Hotter than fuck in the middle of the Phoenix desert. Snakes and scorpions abound....drawn to the deafening noise coming from the room. Demoing heavy music the best way possible...at blistering volumes, no headphones, guitars and mics everywhere, all plugged in at all times, sweating and uncomfortable like we're fifteen in a garage again. Maybe haven't heard Max sound this pissed since Chaos A.D. Okay, time to get to work. Just checkin' in."

He said, "Everybody ask me, 'Hey Max, are you gonna do another Nailbomb?' and the answer is always No, because we killed Nailbomb on purpose. So when Greg approached me with an idea of a project, I said I'll do it, but it has to be like Nailbomb. I'm gonna share the vocals with Greg. We're gonna have a bunch of killer guest musicians, and it'll be the closest thing to a Nailbomb experience. I promise you it is going to be heavy as fuck, angry as fuck, and aggressive as fuck. Me and Greg are pissed off and we're coming your way!!!!"

Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor's book, Seven Deadly Sins: Settling the Argument Between Born Bad and Damaged Good, has hit the New York Times bestseller list! You can see the list here; Seven Deadly Sins is at #26, right between former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger's On China and...Shit My Dad Says.

Anyway, this made us think that other Roadrunner artists probably have stories to tell, and philosophies of life, that readers would enjoy. So we put it to you: which Roadrunner artist do you think should write a book next?

Max Cavalera's Son Drumming For Soulfly July 31

Soulfly will be performing at Lokerse Feesten in Belgium on July 31, and Max Cavalera's son Zyon will be behind the drum kit. He made many special appearances with Cavalera Conspiracy on their recent European tour, performing "Attitude/Cockroaches" at Sonisphere, With Full Force, and Hellfest, to name a few. According to Gloria Cavalera, Max's wife and manager (and Zyon's mom), he learned to drum "sitting at the feet of some of the most gifted metal drummers of all time, including his uncle Iggor Cavalera (when he was in Sepultura!!!), Bill Ward, and Roy Mayorga, to name a few." This will be a special guest appearance only, since Zyon's full-time band is Mold Breaker, formed with his younger brother Igor.
